Kirkland Hall

Trade31 and Stanton Millworks partnered to enhance and preserve historic windows in the oldest building on Vanderbilt University’s storied campus

Vanderbilt University’s iconic Kirkland Hall, originally built in 1875 and rebuilt in 1906 after a devastating fire, had not seen new windows or doors in over a century. Trade31 and Stanton Millworks partnered to modernize this landmark structure while preserving its original character with:

  • 240 custom windows, each uniquely measured and fabricated to fit the existing historic openings
  • 3 sets of historic doors, crafted to replicate the original design while enhancing performance
  • Integration of modern energy efficiency standards, including double-paned glazing to support LEED Gold certification

To achieve historic accuracy, Trade31 began by reverse-engineering the original windows and doors, taking physical samples from the building. Each window’s unique shape, including many with arched tops, required custom cardboard templates, digital CAD drawings, and physical layouts to ensure precision.

Project Type:

Window Restoration /Replication

Investment:

$1,116,000

Upgrading to double-pane insulated glass increased the original thickness from 1 5/8″ to 2 1/4″, improving energy efficiency without compromising the building’s historic façade. This required a full redesign of the window sashes and frames to maintain both structural integrity and visual accuracy. The result is a building with updated windows that look original from both inside and out but meet today’s performance standards.

Stanton Millworks used its specialized machinery, including a 5-head moulder, and time-honored craftsmanship to deliver exacting millwork and trim, all finished using high-performance coatings and an all-wood construction approach. The result is a product that, with routine maintenance, will last another 50+ years.

By combining precision, craftsmanship, and technical innovation, Trade31 and Stanton Millworks preserved one of Vanderbilt’s most historic buildings—ensuring it remains both beautiful and functional for generations to come.
